Design is a conviction. Ecology too.
Silent design means providing a user-centric experience where neither the “coolnessâ€of the product nor the name of the designer is the center of the attention. The era of trendy, “pop†products has to be replaced by products that are designed in a rational way, beautiful and discrete. Good design is about the wise use of beautiful materials, adapted and flexible production methods, the elimination of unnecessary details and features, sustainability, harmony and balance, and above all, always keeping the end user in mind.
“Design†is an often misused word, leading to the misunderstanding that the purpose of design is to disguise products with a “cool†and trendy appearance to making them stand out on a store shelf. When this kind of “design†is done, products tend to be purchased without being really needed and as trends change, the consumer soon gets bored and as a result the product is thrown away.
Products are often made at the lowest cost, using invaluable plastic, or imitation materials leading to a devaluation of the products. Naturally, it becomes easy to throw away something with little value, thus perpetuating the cycle, and the downward spiral continues.
Silent towards the environment
The second aim is to be silent towards the environment. designer is not able to educate consumers but is in fact responsible for the products a customer can purchase. The use of non-ephemeral design elements and the combination of natural and synthetic materials will enhance both the value of a product and indeed the consumer’s appreciation of the object. Consumers react accordingly and use the item more thoughtfully over a longer time, reducing over-consumption and “throw-awayismâ€.
